Our History

Founded: Established in 2018 by a single mother committed to uplifting and empowering other single mothers in Memphis and Shelby County.

Mission: IAMSK aims "to alleviate many of the stressors that prevent single mothers from becoming successful," focusing on community, mental health, financial literacy, educational resources, and more.

Growth & Impact: Since its inception, IAMSK has supported dozens of mothers through assistance with housing, financial literacy, mental health resources, and community support—providing over 500 meals, 18,400 diapers, 20,000 period supplies and other essential resources.

Program Expansion: In 2024, IAMSK took a necessary break to undergo a significant programming restructuring to ensure that single mothers in Memphis and Shelby County are served in the most impactful ways possible.

Vision: IAMSK is committed to expanding its reach, doubling the number of single mothers served by 2026, and fostering sustainable support networks through restructured programming and community partnerships.

Margaret Cowan,

Founding Keeper

Margaret Cowan is the Founding Keeper of I Am My Sister’s Keeper (IAMSK), which originated in 2018. She is the single mother of three amazing young ladies. Margaret completed her Associate’s degree in 2020, her Bachelor’s in Sociology with a minor in Nonprofit Management in 2022, and is currently pursuing her MSW from the University of Memphis. Margaret recognizes the importance of community in the life of a single mom. Her mission is to create a village in which single moms live and support each other. It is her desire to use her God-given gifts and abilities, along with her lifelong lessons, to own a neighborhood full of homes occupied by single moms. Margaret enjoys reading, traveling, and spending time with her family and friends. She understands people, never meets a stranger, and is always willing to lend a helping hand.
