Each week for the next FIVE weeks, we will be introducing you to all of the folks who make what we do possible. Not the donors and funders, but the unseen, unpaid members of our board. They are actually more like the staff. They do A LOT. We appreciate them so we thought you should meet them. :)
Margaret Cowan (that's me!) is the Founding Keeper for I Am My Sister's Keeper, a nonprofit organization based in Memphis, TN. She was born in Madison, AL, grew up in Louisville, KY, moved to Orlando, FL, and currently resides in Memphis. She is the single mother of three amazing young ladies, Cayden Danae (20), Camryn Dechele (17), and Camaya Denyce (16). She JUST completed her AS degree in General Studies at SWTCC after years of starting and stopping. This is why she is so passionate about her single moms finishing school. She plans to pursue her BA in Sociology at the University of Memphis in the Spring of 2021. She founded this organization in 2018 because she is a single mother and has been so since she was 19 years of age. Because of this, Margaret recognizes the importance of community in the life of a single mom. Her mission is to create a village in which single moms live and support each other. It is her desire to use her God-given gifts and abilities along with her lifelong learning and education to become a PAID Executive Director for her organization owning a neighborhood full of homes occupied by single moms. Margaret has completed many training events and classes in an effort to prepare her for the future of this organization. She is most proud of her completion of the Executive Director Bootcamp lead by Momentum Nonprofit Partners and Before You Ask by the Assisi Foundation. Margaret enjoys reading, cooking, and spending time with her family and friends. Her "moms" (what she calls her village) have labeled "the plug". They say that what little she doesn't know, she knows how to find out. And quickly! Margaret gets people, never meets a stranger, and is always willing to lend a helping hand. She is adept at leading, listening, and fixing (problem-solving).
